small cube of side 3 cm is cut off from the big cube as shown in the figure below. The remaining cube is then dipped into red paint. Find the total area of the faces that are painted red. 12 cm

GUIDE: try seeing what is the shortest way to solve this by observing the cut areas :)

The small cube produce 4 new square faces in the big cube. But 2 of the 4 new faces if moved out will form the total surfaceof the original big cube (before cut).---Total area of big cube (after cut) = area of big cube (before cut) + 2 new small surfaces= ( 12 × 12 ) ( 6 sides) + 2 ( 3 × 3 )= 864 + 18= 882 cm2  (ans)
