Difference in pack size = 4 - 3 = 1Difference in cupcakes = 5 + 2 = 7So number of pupils = 71 = 7  (ans,b)---Total cupcakes, using packs of 3 = ( 7 × 3 ) + 5 = 26  (ans, a)

Noticed you tried the listing method, but as quantities get huge, it will not be practical

So the idea is that the sum of shortages and extrasis what needs to be distributed back to the packs in case A for it to be the same as case B.Since the difference in pack size is 1,then the 7 (sum of shortages and extras)will have to be distributed back 7 times.From this we deduce that the amount of pupils is 7.
